Elder Futhark Runes: 24 Meanings + 3 Casts for Total Beginners

By Elias, Ezoteric futurist · October 15, 2026
Short answer: start with the Elder Futhark — 24 runes in 3 families of eight. Each rune is one word of advice, not a fortune cookie. Buy a plain wooden set, learn the 8 of Freyr's family first, and do a one-rune morning pull for a week before attempting any spread.

Runes suffer from two opposite diseases: souvenir-shop mystique and fantasy-novel inflation. Strip both away and you get something beautifully practical — 24 one-word counsellors that fit in a pouch. Vikings carved them on combs and oars, not only on altars: they were a working alphabet for working lives. Use them that way.

The 24, in plain words (by family)

Freyr's family — beginnings and resources

ᚠFehu — earned wealth, flow. Advice: check what already pays you.
ᚢUruz — raw strength, health. Advice: sleep, food, movement before magic.
ᚦThurisaz — thorn, reactive force. Advice: do not poke today; defend, don't attack.
ᚨAnsuz — signal, right words. Advice: say it plainly, write it down. Ansuz shines in interviews.
ᚱRaidho — ordered movement. Advice: mind the timing, not just the goal.
ᚲKenaz — torch, clarity. Advice: be legible; one finished thing beats five started.
ᚷGebo — gift, fair exchange. Advice: no free lunches — price it or gift it cleanly.
ᚹWunjo — joy earned. Advice: celebrate small wins aloud; joy compounds.

Hagal's family — disruption and necessity

ᚺHagalaz — hail, weather you didn't order. Advice: shelter, don't steer, in storms.
ᚾNauthiz — need, friction. Advice: the obstacle is the curriculum — extract its lesson.
ᛁIsa — ice, standstill. Advice: freeze the situation; no new moves until thaw.
ᛃJera — harvest, cycles. Advice: seasonal thinking — plant or reap, never both.
ᛇEihwaz — yew, endurance. Advice: bend without breaking; reliability is a superpower.
ᛈPerthro — dice cup, chance. Advice: take the calculated gamble, cap the downside.
ᛉAlgiz — elk-sedge, protection. Advice: check boundaries, lock what matters.
ᛊSowilo — sun, victory. Advice: step into the light — visibility is the task.

Tyr's family — victory and spirit

ᛏTiwaz — the god's arrow, justice. Advice: hold the line, keep your word.
ᛒBerkana — birch, growth. Advice: tend one growing thing daily.
ᛖEhwaz — horse, trusted partnership. Advice: move with someone, not alone.
ᛗMannaz — the self in community. Advice: ask for help specifically, not vaguely.
ᛚLaguz — water, flow. Advice: stop rowing upstream for one day.
ᛜIngwaz — seed in the dark. Advice: gestate — not everything must sprout now.
ᛞDagaz — daybreak. Advice: the turn already happened; act like morning.
ᛟOthala — homestead, roots. Advice: what did the family teach that still works? Keep it, compost the rest.

Which set to buy first

Plain wood or clay, 24 Elder Futhark pieces, readable carving, a pouch that closes. Skip gold paint, glow-in-the-dark plastic, and «Celtic» alphabets with extra letters — you will outgrow decoration, never honesty. Price is irrelevant; legibility is everything.

3 casts for tonight (in order)

  1. Morning pull (daily). One question — «what needs my attention today?» — shake, draw left-handed, read as advice, do one small thing it suggests. Seven days builds the alphabet into reflex.
  2. Three runes (weekly). Past–present–future in a row. Read them as a sentence: where it started, where it stands, where it leans. Never rearrange to taste.
  3. Situation cast (as needed). Ask one concrete thing («should I email them today?»), draw three: situation, obstacle, counsel. The third rune is the only order you must obey.

Reversed runes (merkstave)? For the first month, read everything upright — learn the alphabet before arguing with it.

Draw tonight's rune with interpretation tuned to your question.
